Overview of Beachwood

Tucked away in the eastern edge of the Santa Monica Mountains, this scenic community is home to an estimated 22,000 residents. It offers the ultimate Southern California lifestyle with sunny weather, cliffside views, and a laid-back environment. It spans 3.87 square miles and is divided into two areas, namely Upper and Lower Beachwood Canyon. The upper portion of the community is the original Hollywoodland development that was first marketed to the public in the 1920s. Beachwood Drive bisects the community and feeds its side streets. The community’s wooded landscape is populated by oaks, palms, eucalypti, poppies, sage, and poppies as well as wildflowers and native grass. It adjoins Griffith Park, a municipal park and picnic area, and provides access to the park’s trailhead. Once home to the Tongva Native Americans, Beachwood Canyon was established in the 1920s by real estate developers Sidney Woodruff and Gen. M. H. Sherman as well as publisher Harry Chandler. They commissioned architects and landscape artists who drew inspiration from southern Europe and Germany and developed Storybook-style architecture.
